If you wonder how this is possible, here is how it works. One of the major improvements in Android is the just-in-time compiler. This compiler is developed for Dalvik. Still speaking of functionalities, there are great improvements when it comes to camera applications. There is no more slider that fails every now and then - just like in Google's previous versions of Android. Instead, camera-related functions can now be found upfront.

One thing that we seem to miss in terms of functionalities is the Froyo's connectivity. Well, Froyo can be connected to a PC as means of USB storage. Yet, other connectivity innovation is that the user can now share 3G over their Wi-Fi connection. Unfortunately, only WPA2 security is available. Yet, one more thing important with regards to connectivity is of course social networking. Therefore, Google has built Facebook as well as Twitter into its Android frozen yogurt mobile operating system.

Yet, one last thing about functionalities is that the user is now offered with pinch-to-peek capability. This way, the user will not have to open every single program or gallery just to know what is running. The Android platform has been developing at an almost dizzying pace lately. The number of new releases in a short period of time has lead many to warn that fragmentation has become a serious danger to Android. Google's Android team has responded saying that the Android fragmentation is a myth. Is fragmentation of Android a myth or is it something that should concern Android developers?

Fragmentation has affected Linux and other open source systems in the past. It occurs when a system has multiple versions with very different components. For example, Linux distributions have their own file system arrangements, different window managers and different packaging systems. This makes it difficult for application developers to create applications for Linux on the expectation that certain components will exist or be in the same location.

Causes of Fragmentation
Android has suffered from some of the classic causes of fragmentation. First, there are wide differences in the capabilities of the hardware devices on which Android runs. While in many systems, this could easily lead to severe fragmentation, Android has not been as affected by this. Android is, however, being very rapidly developed. Each new version of Android has added capabilities. Handsets on the market are running as many as five different versions of the Android operating system. This is where the greatest danger of fragmentation lies. Finally, different manufacturers have been dressing up Android with various add-ons and custom user interfaces. These variations in how Android looks and feels can also lead to fragmentation.

Google has responded to the many reports of Android fragmentation by calling it a "myth". They have put in place some systems and a plan that should help address the issue of fragmentation. Google is so sure of these plans that they believe fragmentation does not exist.

Fragmentation Prevention
One approach that Google is taking to prevent fragmentation is slowing down the development of Android. The rapid development allowed Google to add new functionality to Android and reach a level of maturity that makes Android competitive with other smartphone platforms. Now that Android is fully featured, the development can slow back down.

Along with slowing down the development of Android, Google has developed a plan to make Android more modular. This will allow users of Android based systems to update individual components of the Android system even if their carrier has not moved to a newer version of Android. For example, if a new version of Gmail is released, users can decide to upgrade Gmail on their phones. This modularity is being applied to various systems including items like the keyboard.

Another approach that Google has taken to try and prevent fragmentation of Android is to adopt a series of standards that must be followed to gain access to the Android market. These standards define minimal functionality that a handset must have in order for the carrier to ship the Android market with the phone. By controlling the market, Google has ensured that these standards will be adhered to. These standards generally deal with hardware and include things like every Android handset must have a camera. By using these standards, Google can assure developers that certain functionality will always be available on an Android phone.

Intents are another type of standard that Google uses to avoid functionality. An intent is a type of interface that Android uses. For example, an application that sends email will use an intent to launch a an email composition window. By using intents, it is possible to replace the default email client with another application and still have the expected behavior from other applications that write email.

Custom User Interfaces
While these systems certainly seem to help reduce the risk of fragmentation, calling it a myth seems to be a bit bold on Google's part. The biggest source of potential fragmentation seems to be custom user interfaces being applied to Android by various phone makers. It is not uncommon to see updates to applications in the Android market geared towards fixing a bug with a manufacturer's custom UI. Of course, using anecdotal evidence from the Android market to determine if custom user interfaces are fragmenting Android is not a very solid approach. It seems reasonable, however, that heavy customization of how Android looks and feels will fragment the platform.

This threat goes beyond just creating problems for developers. End users will not be able to pick up any Android handset and expect it to work in the same way. Various custom Androids start to present a learning curve for the end users which may reduce the uptake of Android.

Google says that fragmentation of Android is a myth based on the systems that they have in place to combat fragmentation. However, it does appear from browsing the market that developers are struggling somewhat with supporting the various versions of Android, the different handsets and especially the many custom user interfaces. Open System
Android's strength comes from its openness. The Android SDK is open source and the license governing Android itself allows any handset manufacturer to use and modify it. This allows Android to shape the future of mobile computing by making it available to any hardware manufacturer that wants to use it. This means that Android is likely to be the OS of choice for future mobile computing hardware like tablet PCs or e-book readers.

Android's openness also applies to the selection of mobile carrier. This is one area where many users have been unhappy with Apple's iPhone. Android is widely available which means that most wireless carriers have an Android handset available. Customers want choice. By giving them choice, Android positions itself as the future of mobile computing.

Development Kit

The biggest danger to Android's dominance over the future of mobile computing is fragmentation. The ability of hardware vendors to extend Android without contributing their changes back to the Android project could lead to various incompatible versions of Android. To some extent, this has already happened as developers have had to struggle some to make their applications to support different hardware capabilities. This fragmentation of Android would make it harder for application developers to write code for Android. Since the support of application developers is crucial to the success of any computing platform, fragmentation could be a serious threat to Android as the future of mobile computing.

Is Android the future of mobile computing? I think the answer is that it certainly could be. Android's open nature makes it possible for hardware developers to use it for whatever new devices they can imagine. Its SDK makes it easy for application developers to create the applications users want and need. Both factors make Android a strong contender for the shape of the future of mobile computing. However, there is a danger that hardware vendors will customize Android to the extent that the platform becomes fragmented. If this happens, it will be harder for application developers to write for Android and this could endanger its lead position as the future of mobile computing.

I could argue that it does, but for simplicity, I'll just use an old clich: Time is Money! Saving some time is just as good as saving cash on those busy days out and about. Having this app on your Android phone is like having 300 super-thick Yellowbooks from all over the US crammed into your back pocket. Not a bad thing if you travel a decent amount or enjoy living outside of your house. It's just a great resource to have on hand for those times when you need to find a business's number fast.

eBay

This official app brings eBay to your Android phone. It's kind of crazy, but I think I like this UI better than the actual website on my computer. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad. Nonetheless, it gives you an idea that this Android app was developed correctly and really hits the mark. That is, if you're an eBay fan; if you're not, sorry!

Similar to eBay's Android app, this beauty from Amazon brings all the functionality from the full-sized website to your Android phone. It's amazing how seamless this transition appears for these giant resellers. This is a great thing for us though!

Craigslist

The last of the GIANT resellers' Android apps on this list, I promise. Well, kind of: if you don't include Groupon in your list of "resellers", I haven't lied to you. So, if you've ever used Craigslist, you know how utterly important it is to check out a potential "killer item" within 5 minutes of it being posted and subsequently be the first handful of people to contact the seller to have any hopes of actually ending up with it in your possession.

That being said, if you use Craigslist and you have an Android phone, YOU NEED THIS APP NOW! Haha, sorry to scream, but if you're going to use this portal of goodness with the hopes of eventually buying something you want/need, you have to have instant access to newly posted items. The only way to do that (I'm taking liberties assuming you aren't a recluse and on your home computer 24/7) is to have access "on-the-go" to instant notifications for your set of items that interest you and also a way to view them. This app performs both of these necessary actions and does them well.

This is the official app from the immensely popular and rapidly growing Groupon website. This site has a "cult-like" following (not in a bad way!) which actually benefits its users. This free Android app ensures that you're never out of the "Groupon loop" and you'll have the opportunity to take advantage of the appealing offers wherever you may be.

Another money-saving coupon app? Yes! That's all I can say- the prospects of saving a buck in this economy is a powerful force it seems. I'm almost a bit surprised at myself that I didn't completely inundate this "shopping list" with coupon apps (patting myself on the shoulder for spreading out the love). The app I'm speaking of is the Barcode Scanner. Among other things, it allows you to browse the web on your computer and take a photo of the QR Code of an app you're interested in downloading. Once the code is processed (which takes very little time- talking seconds), the corresponding Android app's download page appears in the Google Marketplace! It's that simple and works like a charm once you get past the short "operator error" stage that plagues most of us.

The latest Android-powered mobile phone to become widely available in the UK has arrived on the Vodafone network - which may mean it's a great time to see what it has to offer.

In February this year, Vodafone announced a partnership with the HTC Corporation that would bring the HTC Magic smartphone to its customers in the UK and across Europe.

Exclusive to Vodafone in Britain, Spain, Germany and France, the handset is now available to pre-order and will be fully available across the nation from May 5th - so far it will be the second device on general release in the UK that runs on Google's Android operating system (OS) - the first being the T Mobile G1.

However, it is not just the innovative OS the HTC Magic has to offer. The gadget is equipped with a host of features that will make it a real contender for rivals like the BlackBerry Storm and Apple iPhone 3G, as well as its G1 predecessor which was also manufactured by HTC.

The Magic offers 3G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as GPS navigation and quadband technology. Since then, Vodafone has also now announced the details of what tariffs the HTC Magic will feature on when it is released in May. The firm revealed on April 20th that it would make the device free on two-year contracts priced at £35 per month and for this, buyers could expect unlimited mobile internet, as well as 600 free calling minutes and unlimited texts. In addition, the phone would come with a 2GB memory card for storing music, photos and other data files.

The cool white design of the device is likely to evoke memories of the Apple iPhone 3G or even the T Mobile G1 in some - and with new additions coming to the market such as LG's latest - the Arena KM900 - as well as the upcoming Nokia N97, it is clear the HTC Magic will have its work cut out.

In comparison to its predecessor, the piece said the touchscreen itself was also something that had undergone some positive changes, stating it had more in common with the sensitivity one might see on an Apple handset or even the new Palm Pre.

"The interface, which uses the latest Cupcake version of Android, is clearly better," Mr Beavis added. "With little tweaks like being able to mark messages in Gmail and then assign them to a label or delete them making the whole experience a little bit nicer."

A little irritation with the handset's screen configuration when using the mobile web was noted, but with Google features and the Android Market integrated with the same level of care as they were in the G1, the reviewer added it was well equipped to hold its own against Apple and its online App Store.

Another point raised was the omission of the qwerty keyboard which, although making the unit as a whole more "svelte", does mean you have to rely on an onscreen keyboard that is not as simple to operate as HTC would like you to believe.

"The keyboard covers a lot of the screen, not leaving you a lot to text into, and if you're working on something that you need to see as you type, this isn't the best," it was advised. However, Mr Beavis concluded that all in all the HTC Magic is "certainly a step up over the G1 and is probably going to be the best Android mobile phone out there for a while".

When IT Pro's Maggie Holland was given the opportunity to test out the device, its good looks were once again highlighted, as was its "very lightweight and slim" body. The user interface was noted as "excellent" and the touch sensitivity of the screen was praised at being set to just the right level of sensitivity.

Although rumours are abound that manufacturers including Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson have a slew of Google Android-powered handsets on the way, the HTC Magic is here and now - it might be time to check it out.

How Did iPhone Come Into Being?

11 Ways to Market Your iPhone and iPod Touch App

While there is no magic formula or single marketing action that may do the trick for you, these strategies can provide you with a framework to help you increase company exposure, sales and profit. Marketing your iPhone/Touch app is definitely a process that can take time.

I will let you know that we have not found price reductions to be the best strategy. We initially thought this might be very effective as the App store structure is set up to rank applications by the number of total downloads. Higher total sales and total downloads by price category are not currently recognized with Apple's system.

Keep in mind for instance that if your app was $5 and you decided to lower it to $0.99, you'd have tell sell five times as many just to break even. Now you might temporarily increase exposure this way, but at the expense of maximizing your profit margins when you are most apt to do well at the beginning of your product life cycle. Customer support issues may increase by a factor of five as well.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with adjusting your app's price in the beginning to find its best market price (which might change over time).

There are 24,455 apps and counting, so let's jump in and get started!

1. The World (iTunes App Store) Is Flat

Consider your potential international market right from the moment of conceptualization. There are people all over the planet eager to use and benefit from quality applications. Initially we intended to include the metric system and local currency in our app, but decided to push it back until version 1.1. We were so eager to start the submission process with Apple and this ended up negatively affected our sales without question. I recommend taking that extra time to make your app useful to the international community, or even a few key markets (China, Russia, Central and South America, Japan, and Germany come to mind).

What does this mean? If currencies are used, auto-detect the user's local currency under their device's general settings; and if applicable handle currency conversions. Make your website, instructions, and sales pages easy to understand and use images to support your text. Consider that for many people, English may be their second or third language. Make your software more intuitive by choosing symbols over text wherever possible. Reach out to bloggers for your niche market in Europe and Asia. Include a complimentary promo code in your correspondence. It can't hurt.

Consider this: we received nearly $1,000 in sales from Italy because of a single online post written in Italian! Now you could go further with this and have your sales page and help instructions translated into major languages like Spanish or Chinese. Prices for quality work vary and you'll need to get someone fluent in the language to double check their work.

Remember there are 65 different versions of iTunes around the world and counting. Single apps can be developed for use on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. How big is the market for both? Apple does not breakdown sales of individual product lines. A conservative estimate with 4.4 million iPhone sales and 22.7 million iPod sales for last quarter would be about 7 million in three months. That's an average of 78,000 new devices coming online daily. Incredible and almost scary. It can't last forever, but wow!

2. Create a Lite or Demo Version

Apple lets developers offer both a free and paid version of the same app, and a free sample is probably the most successful marketing strategy ever. People want to try things. There are plenty of CrApps (crappy apps) out there, so why should people risk money on an app they know nothing about from a company they know even less about? If you can give people a taste that is just enough, they'll buy the whole meal from you! This way you take away much of the risk.

There are numerous strategies for this, but make sure the lite version sales page is clear in its limitations vs. the paid or full version. If you truncate the app too much, people may think it's a complete dud and see no value in paying you anything for the premium release. Give people a clear idea of what they're getting into and this strategy could make you rich. Developer Ethan Nicholas offers motivation to go this route in a recent Wired piece:

When iShoot launched in October, business was slow for a while. And then Nicholas found some spare time to code a free version of the app - iShoot Lite, which he released January. Here's how that helped: Inside iShoot Lite he advertised the $3, full version of iShoot. Users downloaded the free version 2.4 million times. And that led 320,000 satisfied iShoot Lite players to pay for iShoot.

3. Go Free

Now this is something that can be considered for different reasons. Right now "in app" advertising lacks sophistication. When I say that, I mean we don't have Google AdSense yet. I'm sure it's coming, but embedded advertising that does not relate to the content in any manner is really intrusive in my personal opinion. I still read about certain developers making tons of money with embedded app advertising, but it's hard enough to get people to click on ads if they're relevant. When they're not, the click-through rate is pretty low. If your app is something that people use again and again, advertising can still work. We personally did not find it successful as it's much easier to make about 70 cents off of a 99 cent app than to earn the same amount with ads. You could also add a PayPal donation button as AppCubby did, but this probably won't work for you unless you have a large pre-existing customer or fan base.

You could also introduce your app for free. Get people using it, talking about it, and receive positive feedback. Then start charging people. Perfectly acceptable with Apple.

Looking at it from a long-term perspective, you might completely give away the first app to get people talking, create a base and build your brand. After all, nothing spreads like free (especially good free). You can use this to gather contact info and feedback from your initial users and turn them into customers for your next app or product. Be sure to include a "share" feature inside your free app (inside all of your apps!). Make sharing as easy as possible.

4. Send Out a Press Release

PRMac, a free (or almost free) press release distribution service, and the MacNN (Macintosh News Network) syndicate (free to submit) are definitely worth the price of submission. Competing services can charge over $600 for distribution within the United States alone, so these are valuable and less costly alternatives. They say the press release is dead, but these offerings directly targeted your potential customers. You never know who you might reach; and it's vital to provide a press release when soliciting all forms of media.

5. Contact the Top 100 Blogs

Technorati can provide you with the current list. Use a conversational style, get right to the point and include a promo code. Figure out what could sell them on your company. If there's an interesting angle or story around your app, this could increase your chances. Ask them if you could do a guest post. Who knows? When you have sites like Gizmodo that get 3 million pageviews per day, this can absolutely turbocharge sales!

6. Constantly Improve Your Sales Page

This one is pretty basic, but often overlooked. Look at the sales pages of other top apps. What are they doing? Emulate what works and keep researching to spark ideas. You can display up to five images as of this writing, so use them! Use the images that sell your product best. Ask other people what grabs their attention. Use quotes from reviewers; share benefits first and foremost. Customers are not always logical, so don't bore them with statistics. How will your application make their lives better?

7. Use Customer Feedback to Build a Better Product

This is two parts. First, timely respond to customer emails and realize that every interaction with customers, whether good or bad, is a marketing opportunity. When you get feedback via email or through your customer reviews, consider and incorporate these improvements. You can't please everyone all of the time, and you may have limited resources, so you won't be able to add everything. Some great ideas are bound to come your way. First-time users can also let you see how your software is being used from a beginner's perspective.

The second way to receive customer feedback is to embed analytics code in your application. Flurry Analytics and Pinch Media both offer tracking software that will provide insight into how customers are interacting with your application, including real-time download information, all for free. This can be especially useful if 90% of your customers are not using a particular feature. Maybe they don't know it's even there!

8. Continually Update Your Application

Here's a great feature of the App Store. New versions move back to the top of what's new in your category. Incorporating features your customers want, thereby making your product better, coupled with maintaining visibility, can help increase or at least maintain steady sales. Don't abuse this by changing a few words in your help section and then resubmitting or you could ruin this for everybody. If you are working hard to make your product better, the distribution channel can reward you with increased exposure, because you are renewing.

9. Advertise

Google AdWords and AdMob are possible options. I believe we're not there yet, but we're pretty close. AdWords does offer the ability to advertise on mobile devices with a full internet browser, but that doesn't just include the iPhone and Touch. You'll get Androids and more depending on which territory you advertise. Right now they haven't developed conversion tracking for apps either, and without this you can just burn through cash with little results to show for your efforts. You won't know which keywords are working or aren't working. There is one way to track sales using this method: become an iTunes affiliate by joining LinkShare. You can create a link to your sales page in the App store and receive a 5% commission on qualifying purchases.

AdMob has app advertising down better than Google so far. You are able to track your conversions and target relevant Apple devices. You can even target those that are either on or off the WiFi network, which is pretty cool. The downside to this is that you are paying at least 10 cents a click to send someone to your App store sales page. No guarantee of sales here and depending on the price of your application, this leaves very little margin to spend on advertising. It can take a hundred clicks just to get an actual sale, so keep that in mind. Also, since AdMob doesn't target your ads very well, the people clicking are not actually seeking what you're offering as they would on a Google search.

One last consideration: even if you break even from your advertising, you could increase your ranking in the store, and thereby receive more sales from the increased exposure. If you are popular, sales can feed off themselves. iTunes is a distribution channel, but so is Walmart. If you are featured next to the register, you're gonna get more sales. If you're at the bottom of the shelf on aisle 34, good luck!

10. Use Social Networks

Facebook Fan pages, online forums, and quality comments on top blogs and news sites can help you get conversations started about your company. Comments are even crawled and tracked by the major search engines. Be part of the discussion and actually share something relevant or this could work against you. You could quickly end up being considered spam (and despised or banished by your fellow netizens). Subtlety here will carry you far. Also create profiles to further your cause.

11. Get Featured in the App Store

This one is tricky obviously because how do you make it a part of your marketing plan? You do not choose, but are chosen. I will say this for what it's worth. I contacted iTunes about a month ago and asked to be featured Today we are. It never hurts to ask and it can be worth quite a bundle! You never know who you're going to reach. Someone may say something to someone else. That's how it happens.

Thus far, we've increased our average daily sales almost tenfold. We are currently (2/23/09-3/9/09) featured on the front page of the App Store in iTunes under "New And Noteworthy" and #7 in "What's New" on the iPhone/Touch.

Every time I contact media, even if nothing comes of it, I'm sharing my company and my product with powerful people (or people in contact with powerful people) and I never know directly or indirectly where this can lead.

Android Looks Set To Exterminate The Mobile Phones Market

Many people have been waiting on baited breath for news from Google to make an official announcement about a rumoured "gPhone", the internet search giant's first attempt in the mobile phones industry.

Rather, the company is planning to develop a platform, or operating system, that will allow greater functionality to all mobile phones. The formation of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which includes such industry heavyweights as Samsung, Motorola, T-Mobile and O2's parent Telephonica, is gathering to support Google's venture, called Android.

Android is set to be the next multi-platform mobile software operating on many different handsets. It promises to bring not only an operating system but also middleware and key applications. Many of Google's most popular applications like GMail and Google Maps already have mobile versions phone users can run through Java. Android intends to make applications like this more functional on mobile phones but also to provide a fuller internet experience on the go.

While mobile phones are seeing speed increases, they still struggle with web pages when browsing the internet with HSDPA and GPRS and often users are stuck having to view cut-down WAP pages instead. With the gathered intelligence from Google and other partners, the belief is that that all mobile phones will have the capability for full web browsing.

Aside from the internet focus, developers will be provided an easier platform to develop their applications for Android. Aside from Google's own applications, it will be much simpler for independent software developers to make programs that not only work on multiple phones but also collaborate with other applications.

When asked at its announcement whether Android will turn into an actual gPhone in the future, Google said this is not a gPhone per se, but that Android provides the ideal breeding ground for their own mobile phones.

But while consumers are speculating over one particular phone they fail to see the possibility that Android will effectively create thousands of "gPhones". So until the announcement of a specific Google-branded handset, everyone will just have to wait and drool over the fake pictures posted on websites for the next year or two.

Google Set to Challenge Apple's iPhone

Google is set to develop its own mobile telephone and wireless Internet device to rival that of Apple's iPhone. The technology community`s nickname for the Google project is called gPhone. Google currently holds a 29% share of the US Market over 16% to Yahoo according to internet marketing research firm eMarketer, and would like nothing more than to control the mobile device market such as cell phones, blackberry's and more, including their own GPhone.

On this news Google's stock rose to a whopping $600 per share recently, speculating that Google's profits may climb to as high as 50% over last year's numbers.

Acohido reports that, "Richard Doherty, research director at The Envisioneering Group, claims Google is driving toward getting device makers to produce basic handsets equipped with a "Gbutton" that takes users right to a Google texting screen." According to Doherty, "Their goal is to get GPhone texters in the habit of querying its vast databases for directions, phone numbers, movie times or restaurant tips and woo advertisers to sponsor GPhone-delivered answers."

Apparently the hush-hush top secret project by Google (said tongue in cheek of course), is already in a phase where a model is being designed with rumors abound that includes a Google browser and access to Gmail and YouTube (both of which are Google operated).

The first question that all consumers will ask is of course, the cost. As we all remember the iPhone was introduced at a whopping price of around $600, only to have weeks later, Apple irritate its customers by dropping the price $200 after the initial buzz of the device wore off.

Google insiders claim that the GPhone will be offered at a fraction of the cost of the iPhone, Blackberry and Palm Trio. The reason why they can offer it low is Google's ability to offer advertising to companies, but one drawback according to Acohido, "cell phone carriers want a cut of the advertising revenue". A cut that many say Google isn't ready to let go, just yet.

Although nothing has been released as far as an agreement between Google and a cellular provider, manufacturers are said to have devices ready to go and according to Acohido, "could be ready to be on the shelves in a matter of weeks."

The Gphone will be aimed to the younger consumer, so if you are an early 20-something or you have teenagers, chances are this may be the next hot item on it's way just it time, of course, for Christmas.

Fresh off the market on Wednesday was T-Mobile's new smart phone, the G1 . A new phone to say the least, the G1 features Google's first attempt at a cell phone operating system, namely the Android. Built by HTC, and aided in Design by Google, the G1 features full 3G capabilities of T-Mobiles scattered, but growing 3G Network.

The Good:
It's not a brick first of all, but it's not as sleek as the iPhone. Despite its size, it is still quite compact and relatively light, especially considering the full QWERTY keypad built inside the phone. HTC and Google could have easily changed the design to it touch screen only and in turn reduced the size drastically, but where's the fun in that? It would just be a iPhone clone.

The Android system. By far one of the nicest phone operating systems I have encountered. What's really handy is the phone menu bar which can be pulled down from the top of the screen in any application (besides certain games). It makes checking messages, reviewing miss calls, and all general notifications incredibly easy and efficient.

Although not a completely embraced yet, it may prove to be quite powerful in the G1s future and that would be the Marketplace running with the Android Operating system where any publisher and release their software for public sharing. Software such as a barcode scanner, a music tracker, and a map maker are all readily available now. The ability for any coder to create software could create a wealth of applications for the phone and render it's possible interests of use limitless.

By far one of the greatest and most attractive features would be the built in keypad. It functions terrifically and remarkable easy to use. The buttons are slightly beveled so you can feel each key, but not significantly so that they bulge out.

The YouTube integration is phenomenal. For an operating system designed by Google, you can expect the G1's YouTube application to be top notch. Videos are neatly organized in different categories and it's quite easy to search.

For what its worth, the G1 will not disappoint, but it does not amaze either. Overall solid and a great jump for Google's Android system - a few tweaks for the next version and a new gold standard may be set.

The Bad:
First of all, the G1 is no iPhone killer. Although quite impressive, the G1 needs to fix some major drawbacks before it begin pinching at Apple's pocketbooks. First of all, and probably the most noticeable is the swivel screen's rattle. It's a bit shaky, and makes a small squeak when pressed down. Not a big deal, but still something that should have been resolved. Next, the design is a bit iffy. It lacks the sleek stylishness of the iPhone and has an odd "chin" at the bottom. The G1 also lacks multi-touch, again, although the not the biggest deal, for it's price and design, these things should have been included with the package. Small things also plague the G1 - things such as not having a stock software touch screen keyboard and the inability to record video. Lastly, media needs revamping. The music and media playing software needs a good kick as the stock ones are no good. There also needs to be a headphone jack, not a primitive USB port. It's pretty ridiculous how HTC, the manufacturer of many other smart phones all of which have a standard headphone jack would decide to take it away on perhaps its biggest launch to date.

That all said in done, the G1 is similar to the iPhone when it first released. It was pretty solid however it still customers still had their gripes. But after a revision and fixing of issues, it became even better, namely the well refined iPhone 3G out today. If T-Mobile, Google, and HTC knows anything about perpetuating their market, they would release a second edition of the G1 as well. The ironic name of the G1 provides perfect naming for future models. My guess is that the next ones would be called the "G2", "G3" and so on.

Hopes are great for the G1. The Android operating system proves to be surprisingly user friendly and easy to use. Not the iPhone killer at the moment, but if T Mobile, Google, and HTC releases a refined version, Apple and AT&T should be watching their backs.

So if Google, HTC, or T Mobile ever gets to read this, the following is the minimum of changes you should make to the G1 .

1. Fix the squeaky screen - The rattle makes it feel a bit cheap.
2. Headphone Jack Please!
3. A bit more stock memory would be nice. 1 gigabyte just doesn't cut it these days.
4. Multi-Touch. Complete steps up to here and you'll be in par in terms of hardware compared to Apple.
5. More sleek, smoother design. Get rid of the "chin" that protrudes from the bottom. Was it really necessary?
6. Add some better music playing software not to mention better camera software as well.
7. Expand 3G Coverage. (T-Mobile, if you plan to sell any more of these, you will need to build towers that support the full capabilities of 3G.)

First Android Build Shown to Mobile Phone Developers

This past week Google's developer's conference was one of the first demos of the Android mobile phone operating system. Announced last year by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of mobile phone manufacturers and software houses who want to have one unilateral platform for all mobile phones to run on Android looks to be one of the most interesting revolutions in the Mobile phones market.

Being developed by Google the phones are highly likely to blend well with other Google-ware like the popular Maps service and Google Mail service. The stand out feature is that the operating system is being designed to run on a wide range of mobile phones regardless of their feature set. In a similar way to how PC operating systems are made to work on a wide range of computers with varying specifications Android will take advantage of specific phone features such as built in GPS and touch screen interfaces.

This past week had the operating system running on a touch screen unnamed handset and it was sporting a number of new features since it was last shown off earlier in the year. One exciting feature was how the handset was unlocked; the user had to draw a specific shape on the touch screen to unlock the keypad. Another feature took advantage of the GPS function by having an on screen compass which had been tried on other handsets such as the GPS enabled S60 phones offered by Nokia but attendees said the example shown by Google seemed to work much more fluidly than other attempts.

The decision to show off the software at their developers conference was obviously to entice the collective minds into coming up with some ideas for possible applications for their operating system, with it being open-source software, a factor popular with the programming masses, it looks promising that any mobile phones sporting Android's operating system would have a lot to offer the stale mobile phones market.

Obviously a lot of comparisons were made between the software and Apple's stand out mobile phone the iPhone, the interface seemed to bear some of the Apple hallmarks such as saving Youtube links as icons on the main screen and a touch based interface.

Android enabled phones aren't phones that can only be utilized if a robot says so (I'm sure someone in the world thought that). But rather they are phones that utilize Google's very own mobile operating system: Android. This is Google's way of entering the mobile phone market (because they're part of everything else, so why not?).

Android phones aren't common yet, in fact there's only one thus far: The G1. This Google phone was released in later 2008 and the only phone that supports the operating system. Other android enabled phones may be slated for the future, but the G1 is the only one currently. And the phone itself is relatively inexpensive at approximately 180 bones.

Additionally, the coding for the Android operating system is open source. This means that the code is available for users to manipulate and add to at their will. Restrictions apply but it's still a pretty cool addition. Although, the open source is often criticized as not being fully open. This is because Google set up certain parts of the code as off limits to the public. The majority is available however, and that's more than most providers and operating systems would allow.

As far as Google phones are concerned however, you're only going to find the one. Prototypes may pop up, as they ran the Android platform as well, but they were never released to the public. So don't be confused if you see a phone running the platform and don't see it on the shopping list of your favorite phone distributor.

So, I think we can all assume the question on everyone else's mind: is the android phone, the G1, worth the buy?

And simply stated the answer is yes. In a nutshell, the pros outweigh the cons enough to make this phone a great purchase (and just in time for the holidays!). At 180 dollars this Gphone is priced much cheaper than phones that are similar in features. What makes this phone different is the full QWERTY keyboard. This is a powerful add-on in addition to the touch screen because of how so many touch screen phones lack a physical keypad.

And some people say this Gphone's QWERTY keypad isn't as nice as it could be, and that may be true, but consider the alternative on similar phones: no physical keypad at all.

And a physical pad to type is just one of many features (fully operational android OS being another) that makes this Google android phone a great phone and a great buy.

So, even if many people remain clueless about technology, they can relax and be worry free knowing an android operated phone is simply a great technological advancement: It's a phone with a brand new operating system designed with users in mind. This alone should be persuasion enough. If it's not, let's remember that similar phones cost over 300 dollars, and this particular phone is only 180. Although it's the only android operated phone on the market currently, it surely will not be the last.

When comparing two great mobile phones from one very reputable mobile phone manufacturer, such as with this comparison between the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Tocco, it does make sense that there be little between them, especially considering that they lie in the same 'generation'. That said, there are some small differences that exist, and may be the determining factor in any choice for a mobile phone.

Differences in Features of the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Tocco

Most visibly, in terms of size, both appear fairly similar at a glance. However, closer inspection will reveal the Samsung Tocco to be the smaller of the two, by a couple of millimetres here and there. Despite this, both Samsung Tocco and Samsung Omnia possess the slim, sleek profile that is much sought after, and so any differences in size generally end up going unnoticed. Likewise, the Samsung Omnia is about 15 grams heavier, not much, but just a little.

In terms of display, both have very nice, big, screens, and yet the Samsung Omnia takes the lead in this regard by a fraction as it has superior resolution at 400x240 against the Samsung Tocco's 320x240. Again, a small difference, but present nonetheless.

More apparent differences come when looking at the storage memory of both devices. Where the Samsung Tocco has a somewhat respectable 223 MB of internal memory that is expandable through microSD card, the Samsung Omnia completely blows it out of the water with its 8 GB or 16 GB of internal memory, depending on make. The Samsung Omnia even allows for microSD card usage, however one small downside is that its card slot is located below the battery, a feature that many find to be a hassle. On the other hand, arguably, with 8 GB or 16 GB of storage, that card slot would never really be needed too much.

One other point for the Samsung Omnia goes to the GPS system that it has. A great feature, by any means, it allows for navigational help and tagging of images. Unfortunately, this feature is not present at all on the Samsung Tocco, and thus the Samsung Omnia wins out on this one uncontested against.

Other features are fairly similar throughout, from connectivity with HSDPA, Bluetooth and USB to the 5.0 megapixel cameras that both possess. It would seem that, on the whole, apart from the size and weight differences, it is in storage capabilities and GPS system where the biggest differences lie. There are some small differences in interface too, and generally more people seem comfortable with that of the Samsung Omnia.

Bottom line, the Samsung Omnia does win out in the war of features, however that is not to suggest that the Samsung Tocco doesn't have its own bright points either. If, for instance, a person is looking for something less feature intensive but lighter and maybe just that little bit smaller, than the Samsung Tocco might be a good choice. In the long run however, it is tough to beat the sheer feature-packed power of the Samsung Omnia.
