First Android Build Shown to Mobile Phone Developers

This past week Google's developer's conference was one of the first demos of the Android mobile phone operating system. Announced last year by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of mobile phone manufacturers and software houses who want to have one unilateral platform for all mobile phones to run on Android looks to be one of the most interesting revolutions in the Mobile phones market.

Being developed by Google the phones are highly likely to blend well with other Google-ware like the popular Maps service and Google Mail service. The stand out feature is that the operating system is being designed to run on a wide range of mobile phones regardless of their feature set. In a similar way to how PC operating systems are made to work on a wide range of computers with varying specifications Android will take advantage of specific phone features such as built in GPS and touch screen interfaces.

This past week had the operating system running on a touch screen unnamed handset and it was sporting a number of new features since it was last shown off earlier in the year. One exciting feature was how the handset was unlocked; the user had to draw a specific shape on the touch screen to unlock the keypad. Another feature took advantage of the GPS function by having an on screen compass which had been tried on other handsets such as the GPS enabled S60 phones offered by Nokia but attendees said the example shown by Google seemed to work much more fluidly than other attempts.

The decision to show off the software at their developers conference was obviously to entice the collective minds into coming up with some ideas for possible applications for their operating system, with it being open-source software, a factor popular with the programming masses, it looks promising that any mobile phones sporting Android's operating system would have a lot to offer the stale mobile phones market.

Obviously a lot of comparisons were made between the software and Apple's stand out mobile phone the iPhone, the interface seemed to bear some of the Apple hallmarks such as saving Youtube links as icons on the main screen and a touch based interface.

The Android operating system is currently nearing completion with handset manufacturers Motorola, HTC and Samsung all volunteering to use Android on their forth-coming mobile phones in the next year.

The Amazing Google Android Operating System

The Android basically is a software podium and an operating mechanism especially for mobile devices, which is developed by Google. It permits developers to write a managed code in a language that resembles Java, and it utilizes Java libraries that are developed by Google.

It does not sustain programs that are developed in the native code. The Android podium was unveiled on 05th November 2007, and coincided with the inauguration of Open Handset Alliance. This Alliance was formed with the help of a conglomerate of around 34 software, hardware and telecom organizations that pledged to promoting open standards for mobile phones.

Google acquiring Android Inc:

Android was known to make software programs for mobile phones. When in July 2005, Google acquired Android Inc., rumors spread that Google was making an entry in the mobile phone market. Google thereafter applied for a patent for a mobile payment scheme and came to be known as Gpay. It would let the customer send a message to Google by providing payment details to some specified recipient. The user's account would then be debited by Gpay, by giving credit to the payee's account.

Google's Android may bring new risks:

Googles's Android open source cell phone operating mechanism, along with Open Handset Alliance may expose mobile operators to more security risks than any other devices that are currently selling in the market. Currently there is no central authority that can sign and test the Android applications, and this unavoidably increases the risk of misuse. But Android was meant to be designed in such a manner as to reduce the effects of such misuse.

An independent procedure is followed by the Linux based Android system for each application. This prevents malicious programs from disturbing other applications or important telephone functions. If an application program makes it essential to access the data or phone operations, for instance to read phone numbers in the address book or make a telephone call, the user needs to explicitly enable this during installation itself.

The function in the system was neatly demonstrated with the help of an Android emulator and is a division of the software development kit that is available free of cost. It was also demonstrated as to how an Android terminal was able to study a shopping list using the Google spreadsheets, and show it in an appropriate format for mobile use. The data present in the spreadsheet application could also be edited in real time using the Android application. Thus it was asserted that Android was very much adaptable to such a kind of online data processing.

The Android Phone

Google and T-Mobile have teamed up to create a new breed of cell phone. The T-Mobile G1 Android is the world's first Android Phone. An "android" is traditionally defined as a robot with human qualities. Perhaps the name "Android" was chosen because of the capabilities of this new phone.

It's known as the T-Mobile G1 Android, the Android Phone, the G1 Phone, or (more informally) the Google Phone.

The G1 Android phone integrates fully with your Google accounts. Here are a few of the features and capabilities of this new cell phone:

* An Android phone allows you to browse the internet just as you would on a normal computer.
* The Android allows one to run several applications at the same time, on one phone. You can switch between applications, and you can also be notified when something new occurs on one of those applications.
* It allows you to chat and share photos on applications such as Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, etc.
* The Android phone allows you to copy URLs and share them with friends via a chat line, using a simple touch-screen interface.

The following Google applications can be accessed and used directly by the Android Phone:

* Google Maps
* YouTube
* Gmail
* Contacts
* Calendar
* IM (Instant Message)

All of these Google applications will be available to you with a single logon - and they will be automatically synchronized with the web. What that means is that any change you make in one of your Google accounts from your phone will also show up the next time you log on from any other computer.

For example, when you are out and about with your phone and you meet a new contact, you might want to save their contact information. All you do is save it into your Google Contacts on your Android phone. That information will be available to you online, in your Gmail account, and in any other applicable Google account, accessible by any computer in the world.

Any information you save on your phone in this way will appear on your computer as well - and vice-versa.

If you lose or break your phone, your data will still be there waiting for you on your Google account, which you can access from anywhere in the world. And there is no need to worry about your information being stolen, as its password-protected.

Here is another example of the a use of a Google Android phone. Once you have a contact address saved into your Google account, you can easily find that location on a map - using Google Maps, of course. And what's more, you can access street level events in any area where this is available.

This makes it a breeze to get directions to a new location! Simply find your contact on a a map with a couple of clicks, and use a street-level view to find your way if needed!

Another example of the use of the Android phone is the integration of the cell phone with your Google Calendar. Any event you save on your Google Calendar will be available to you on your phone, wherever you are. So you can access your schedule easily, on the go and from anywhere, as long as you have your phone with you.

No more schedule books! And you can probably say goodbye to those tiny notebooks and pads of paper you carry around to save your information.

What's more, once you save information on your Google Android phone, there's no need to transfer it over after you get home. Its all there, safely stored on your Google account, for ready access whenever you need it.

T-Mobile's Android Phone, Changing the Face of Mobile Technology

The Android phone, officially unveiled on September 23, 2008, certainly sounds futuristic and conjures visions of hundreds of thousands of people walking around with a tiny little robot in their pockets and purses. While that's still the stuff of science-fiction, the Android phone does have the potential to shift the course of an entire industry because it's the first phone to use Google's open-sourced Android operating system. While T-Mobile's G1 is the first phone to use the new system, other companies like LG, Samsung and Motorola plan to release Android-powered phones next year.

The Android phone features a large, clear 3.2 inch TFT-LCD touchscreen with 320 x 480 (HVGA) resolution, and a trackball with enter button for navigation. The hinged screen covers a slide-out keypad that's actually a full 5-row QWERTY keyboard. It also comes with a 3 megapixel camera with built-in autofocus.

The G1 offers full web browsing capabilities with one-click Internet access. If you live in a metropolitan area when you can take advantage of T-Mobile's high-speed 3G service, you can surf the Internet lightning-fast. For those not in a 3G network area, you can hook into any Wi-Fi connection and view the same webpages, including those rich with content like videos on YouTube.com, with slightly more loading time.

The Android phone uses Bluetooth connectivity, contains a GPS system, an SD slot, a motion sensor, even a digital compass, and weighs all of 5.57 ounces. But it's the operating system, and its means of accessing the Internet, that sets the G1 apart from the crowd. Google's open-sourced Android operating system gives anyone with the knowledge to do so free reign to create applications for the phone. No other system gives users this license. And with your G1, you'll have one-touch access to the Android Market, an online center that brings together all the applications created for Android. Users can purchase and download applications at will and even rate each application. Those who create the applications simply register, upload the application with a description, and publish it at the site for distribution. Google anticipates this to be one of the key draws of the Android phone.

The G1 comes with one-touch access to Google applications like YouTube, Google Maps, the calendar, Google Talk, and Google search, as well as free access to Gmail, Google's popular free online email service. Amazon.com has also partnered with the G1. The Amazon MP3 store comes pre-loaded onto the Android phone so those with a Wi-Fi connection can easily purchase and download digital music.

T-Mobile hopes there will be an Android phone under every tree this year (their goal is to sell 400,000 units by the end of the year) with the release just in time for Christmas. You can pre-order now in the US, with an anticipated shipping date of October 22. The Android phones are expected to be available in November in the UK, and in Europe in early 2009.

Google's Android Takes the Cake

A lot of people are clueless about technology. And while it pays to be blissfully ignorant in some cases, most times it doesn't.

Android enabled phones aren't phones that can only be utilized if a robot says so (I'm sure someone in the world thought that). But rather they are phones that utilize Google's very own mobile operating system: Android. This is Google's way of entering the mobile phone market (because they're part of everything else, so why not?).

Android phones aren't common yet, in fact there's only one thus far: The G1. This Google phone was released in later 2008 and the only phone that supports the operating system. Other android enabled phones may be slated for the future, but the G1 is the only one currently. And the phone itself is relatively inexpensive at approximately 180 bones.

Additionally, the coding for the Android operating system is open source. This means that the code is available for users to manipulate and add to at their will. Restrictions apply but it's still a pretty cool addition. Although, the open source is often criticized as not being fully open. This is because Google set up certain parts of the code as off limits to the public. The majority is available however, and that's more than most providers and operating systems would allow.

As far as Google phones are concerned however, you're only going to find the one. Prototypes may pop up, as they ran the Android platform as well, but they were never released to the public. So don't be confused if you see a phone running the platform and don't see it on the shopping list of your favorite phone distributor.

So, I think we can all assume the question on everyone else's mind: is the android phone, the G1, worth the buy?

And simply stated the answer is yes. In a nutshell, the pros outweigh the cons enough to make this phone a great purchase (and just in time for the holidays!). At 180 dollars this Gphone is priced much cheaper than phones that are similar in features. What makes this phone different is the full QWERTY keyboard. This is a powerful add-on in addition to the touch screen because of how so many touch screen phones lack a physical keypad.

And some people say this Gphone's QWERTY keypad isn't as nice as it could be, and that may be true, but consider the alternative on similar phones: no physical keypad at all.

And a physical pad to type is just one of many features (fully operational android OS being another) that makes this Google android phone a great phone and a great buy.

So, even if many people remain clueless about technology, they can relax and be worry free knowing an android operated phone is simply a great technological advancement: It's a phone with a brand new operating system designed with users in mind. This alone should be persuasion enough. If it's not, let's remember that similar phones cost over 300 dollars, and this particular phone is only 180. Although it's the only android operated phone on the market currently, it surely will not be the last.

Using Google PhoneBook To Find A Phone Number

When searching for a phone number, the internet has a huge amount of information to offer, but the challenge is finding the details you are looking for. Google is an extremely popular and effective internet search engine that can identify major links for just about any name or phrase. While many people have gotten bored and googled their name and that of their friends and family members, Google has a phone book feature that is not nearly as well known, and it can be a great resource when looking for a phone number.

Google uses public records provided by phone companies to provide an online directory of public and residential land lines. While it does not have any listings or information about cell phone customers, most people still have a public number at work or at home that Google Phone book can identify quite easily. It also has a reverse phone number lookup.

Using Google Phone book works with the same general search field as the primary search engine. Simply type in the word phonebook followed by colon, followed by your specific information. The last name, of course, is essential, as simply putting in a common last name like "Smith" and the state of residence would turn up a list off all the people with that last name living in a given state or town. The more details you can give about the person for whom you want to find a number, the better. To use the reverse phone number lookup, simply type a public or residential number into the main Google search engine. Although Google does have access to a lot of information, don't give up if you can't find a public number using this search engine because Google allows customers to opt out of this directory. The chances are good that you can use internet resources to find out more information about a person or phone number.

Now that you know how to search a phone number using internet resources and directories like Google phone book, you are probably closer to identifying the mystery name or number

Samsung Omnia Vs Samsung Tocco

When comparing two great mobile phones from one very reputable mobile phone manufacturer, such as with this comparison between the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Tocco, it does make sense that there be little between them, especially considering that they lie in the same 'generation'. That said, there are some small differences that exist, and may be the determining factor in any choice for a mobile phone.

Differences in Features of the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Tocco

Most visibly, in terms of size, both appear fairly similar at a glance. However, closer inspection will reveal the Samsung Tocco to be the smaller of the two, by a couple of millimetres here and there. Despite this, both Samsung Tocco and Samsung Omnia possess the slim, sleek profile that is much sought after, and so any differences in size generally end up going unnoticed. Likewise, the Samsung Omnia is about 15 grams heavier, not much, but just a little.

In terms of display, both have very nice, big, screens, and yet the Samsung Omnia takes the lead in this regard by a fraction as it has superior resolution at 400x240 against the Samsung Tocco's 320x240. Again, a small difference, but present nonetheless.

More apparent differences come when looking at the storage memory of both devices. Where the Samsung Tocco has a somewhat respectable 223 MB of internal memory that is expandable through microSD card, the Samsung Omnia completely blows it out of the water with its 8 GB or 16 GB of internal memory, depending on make. The Samsung Omnia even allows for microSD card usage, however one small downside is that its card slot is located below the battery, a feature that many find to be a hassle. On the other hand, arguably, with 8 GB or 16 GB of storage, that card slot would never really be needed too much.

One other point for the Samsung Omnia goes to the GPS system that it has. A great feature, by any means, it allows for navigational help and tagging of images. Unfortunately, this feature is not present at all on the Samsung Tocco, and thus the Samsung Omnia wins out on this one uncontested against.

Other features are fairly similar throughout, from connectivity with HSDPA, Bluetooth and USB to the 5.0 megapixel cameras that both possess. It would seem that, on the whole, apart from the size and weight differences, it is in storage capabilities and GPS system where the biggest differences lie. There are some small differences in interface too, and generally more people seem comfortable with that of the Samsung Omnia.

Bottom line, the Samsung Omnia does win out in the war of features, however that is not to suggest that the Samsung Tocco doesn't have its own bright points either. If, for instance, a person is looking for something less feature intensive but lighter and maybe just that little bit smaller, than the Samsung Tocco might be a good choice. In the long run however, it is tough to beat the sheer feature-packed power of the Samsung Omnia.

How To Hard Reset Your Dopod 818pro

The Dopod 818Pro is a windows mobile device. It is also sold in other parts of the world as Qtek S200, Dopod 830, O2 XDA Neo, i-mate JAMin, Orange SPV M600, Vodafone VPA Compact S, and TC 500. Owning a windows mobile device is like owning a mini laptop. Like everything that is made by Microsoft, there's a tendency for this windows mobile device to hang up or cause problems that would make the device unresponsive.

The most common solution when a desktop PC or laptop becomes unresponsive is to do a reset. In a Windows Mobile Device, doing a soft reset is as simple as turning the device on and off to refresh the memory. However, there are some problems that cannot be solved by just doing a soft reset and that's when you have to hard reset your device. Hard reset involves wiping your Dopod 818Pro of everything in its memory. It's like reformatting your phone. To do a hard reset on a Dopod 818Pro and similar device involves two methods:

1. First Method. This is the simplest and some people overlook this because they think that it's not a proper hard reset but it is. Just go to Start->Settings-> and then Clear Storage. Enter 1234 and then press yes. That's it. However, there are times that your phone becomes so unresponsive that it won't even get pass the start-up screen. That's when the second method comes in handy.

2. Second Method. Press the camera and the communication button on the right side of the device simultaneously. While keeping the buttons pressed, press the hole at the bottom of the device with the stylus. Release the stylus but don't release your hold on the camera and communication buttons. The screen will turn black and then a message will appear that says to press the send button. Press the call button (green phone button) on the device and while keeping the button pressed, release the camera and communication buttons. There will be a message stating that the phone is being formatted. Release the send button. You are now finished doing a hard reset on the Dopod 818Pro.

BlackBerry Applications - What Software Developers Need to Know

As the BlackBerry smartphone gains market share, software developers are increasingly wondering if they should be writing or porting applications to run on the BlackBerry platform. It's not a decision to be taken lightly because there are significant investments in time and effort in writing software for any mobile platform. And the BlackBerry platform is very different from the other platforms. Here's a quick rundown on what you need to know before creating BlackBerry applications.

1. BlackBerry software is written in Java. Java is the only choice for non-browser application development. You can't write applications in C or C++, so don't even bother going there. (The very earliest models of the BlackBerry supported C/C++, but the platform switched to Java exclusively several years ago.)
2. The Java is Java ME. The BlackBerry's Java support is for Java ME (Micro Edition), the stripped-down version of Java designed for mobile phones and other constrained devices. The language is the same (most features are supported) but the class libraries are vastly different -- mostly because they're much smaller. This makes porting code a challenge.
3. But it's also BlackBerry-specific. The Java ME class library is small, so the BlackBerry augments it with a number of device-specific APIs, including the graphical user interface APIs. You need to learn these APIs to write "real" BlackBerry applications.
4. You need to test on real devices. This shouldn't be any surprise to anyone who's done mobile application development before, but it's even truer on the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry simulator can easily give you a false sense of security when testing your application features, especially the networking aspects. There's nothing like testing it on a real device. Preferably, several real devices.
5. BlackBerry infrastructure is complex. BlackBerry programming isn't just about understanding Java and the BlackBerry APIs, it's also about understanding the entire BlackBerry infrastructure, from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and everything in between.

The reality is that BlackBerry programming is a specialization that is developed over time. It's not nearly as simple as it seems at first, as many developers have discovered to their dismay.

BlackBerry Programming exposes one software developer's views on BlackBerry software development and BlackBerry consulting.
